Q: What are Dr Di Taranto’s credentials?

A: Giuseppe Di Taranto has extensive credentials. He is a GMC registered surgeon (n 7614248), he is on the specialist register for plastic surgery in the UK and on the Italian Medical Board. He is a member of the Italian Society of Plastic Surgery and a member of EPATH and WPATH. He completed a Royal College of surgeons (RCS) senior fellowship in breast surgery, as well as other international fellowship programmes in the UK and abroad. Mr Di Taranto also completed a PhD at Sapienza University of Rome and has both edited and reviewed international peer-reviewed journals.

Q: If I am not happy with my results, what do you charge for a revision?

A: While we strive to provide the best possible care to all of our patients, and to manage the expectations of what is, and what is not achievable through surgery, in rare cases the patient may consider that the outcome of the procedure does not meet the expected results, as agreed between the surgeon and the patient at the consultation. In such situations, the surgeon who performed the original procedure will give due consideration to the possibility of improving the result through a further procedure.

If the surgeon deems that further surgery is necessary, in order to improve the result of the original procedure, and it is agreed that the results do not reflect those agreed between the surgeon and the patient at the time of consultation, the cost of the surgical fees will be waived. If, however, the surgeon deems the results of the procedure acceptable, and within the normal limits of surgery, any surgical fees will be covered by the patient. It is important to note that any further surgery will only be offered if the surgeon considers it to be beneficial to the patient.

In either case, all fees for revision surgery relating to the hospital, clinic, anaesthesia, anaesthetist and consumables will be paid by the patient.

Q: As a trans or non-binary person, is it important to choose a surgeon who specialises in gender surgery?

A: Choosing a surgeon who specialises in the field will ensure your experience is a positive one. WPATH guidelines recommend that surgeons who perform gender affirming surgical procedures have the following credentials:

  • training and documented supervision in gender affirming procedures
  • maintenance of an active practice in gender affirming surgical procedures
  • knowledge about gender diverse identities and expressions
  • continuing education in the field of gender affirmation surgery
  • tracking of surgical outcomes.
Q: Do you offer top surgery to those with a higher BMI?

A: Yes, Dr Di Taranto has a broad experience in liposuction and is able to improve the chest contour of patients with higher BMI.

Q: Is top surgery performed as a day case?

A: Yes, we strongly believe that patients recover better in their own bed and that it is important to encourage them to mobilise quickly after surgery for a faster and smoother recovery. This reduces the risk of contracting infections in hospital as well as minimising the amount of time that the patient is in an unfamiliar environment, which can be overwhelming for some individuals.

Q: What is your approach to drains?

A: As part of our approach to enhanced recovery, we discharge patients with very fine drains which are the same ones used in face lift patients. The use of drains reduces concerns around fluid collections (seroma, hematoma) which are quite common in the literature relating to chest surgery. Drains are removed at the first follow up appointment. Furthermore, in patients with a higher BMI, who have had liposuction, the drains collect the fluids from the lipo and seal the wound, allowing for better contouring and helping the skin to shrink and settle in the right positions.

Q: Do you travel for the consultation or are all consultations done online?

A: All consultations are carried out in person, in line with best medical practise. Virtual consultations are allowed in selected cases and for follow up appointments. For more information contact us.

A: Patients have two standard follow up appointments in the wound care clinic with the nurse of the hospital (the second can be virtual if the healing process is smooth and there are no concerns). Follow up appointments happen at the 8 to 12 weeks, six month and one year post surgery mark. All staff are well trained in wound care but Dr Di Taranto is available in case of any issues. Patients are followed up until fully healed and they can have further appointments, should they require them. These are included in the price.

How long are patients under the care of Dr Di Taranto?

A: Patients are under the care of Dr Di Taranto for one year after the surgery.

Q: What is Dr Di Taranto’s upper limit in terms of BMI?
